VERNA WRIGHT PRIZES 2011

 

Verna Wright prize for oral presentation

Ingrid Wilkinson is the winner of the prize for the best oral presentation. At the Summer meeting in Keele she presented Feasibility of combining physiotherapy and electrical stimulation to improve gait in patients less than 6 months post first stroke’.

Stephanie Brown won the poster prize for her poster presented at the Winter meeting in Cardiff: “They think I’m drunk because I’m staggering”: A Mixed Methods Investigation of Cerebellar Ataxia and the Effects of Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthoses (DEFOs): Qualitative study

Congratulations to Ingrid and Stephanie.

The prizes will be presented at the Winter meeting in Ely, 2012.

 

 

 

New Resources

"From Strength to Strength: Celebrating 10 Years of the Allied Health Professions in Scotland"

The Scottish Government recently published this report highlighting new ways of working, research and development and other changes to the professions in Scotland over the last 10 years.
Professions include Radiographers (Therapeutic and Diagnostic), Speech and Language Therapist, Prosthetist, Podiatrist, Physiotherapist, Orthotist, Orthoptist, Occupational Therapist, Dietician, Arts Therapists (art, drama, music).

Medical rehabilitation in 2011 and beyond

A new report from the Royal College of Physicians with support from the British Society of
Rehabilitation Medicine has been recently published. It examines the current state of rehabilitation medicine, and considers how it is likely to develop over the coming years.

Scottish Government developing Clinical Standards for Wheelchair & Seating Services.

The 12-week long public consultation on the Draft Clinical Standards for NHS Wheelchair & Seating Services in Scotland is now up and running and should be of interest to SRR members.  The closing date for submissions is Friday 25th February.  The consultation documents are available from:

LAST SRR MEETING

The Winter 2012 meeting was hosted by Dr Andrew Bateman of the Oliver Zangwill Centre. The conference took place at The Maltings by the river in Ely, Cambridgeshire on the 24th January 2012. Our special thanks go out to the local organisers in Ely, Andrew and especially Leisha O'Brien who helped our Secretariat with making sure the day ran smoothly.

A special thank you to the symposia speakers Dr Eivor Oborn and Dr Terry Dickerson for their symposium 'Bridging the type II gap: Service Implementation Research', Dr Fergus Gracey and Dr Tom Manly for their symposium on Neuropsychological Rehabilitation 'From Science to Practice: a Novel Intervention of Rehabilitation of Executive Function'.

Thank you to all the free research paper presenters for their quality presentations. Delegates had an overwhelming amount of posters  to view during breaks which were very interesting and created alot of discussions - 11 Research Posters and 13 Work in Progress posters.

Previous Meeting

An excellent Joint Summer Meeting was held at Keele University with the BSRM on the 3rd, 4th & 5th July. The meeting was hosted by SRR Council member Dr Anand Pandyan and Professor Tony Ward of the BSRM. Our special thanks go to the local organisers at Keele and Sandy Weatherhead from the BSRM for her hard work in administering this conference.

A special thank you to the symposia speakers: Dr Caroline Stewart, Professor Thierry Lejeune (Belgium), Professor Jean-Michael Gracies (France), Professor Maarten IJzerman (Netherlands), Professor Nick Watson, Professor Michael Barnes, Dr Finbarr Martin, Dr Margaret Phillips, Professor Nachi Chockalingam, Dr Frederike van Wijck, Dr Rory O’Connor and Professor Nadina Lincoln.

Also a special thank you to the ‘How To Do It’, Ultrasound, SIGAM and SIGEAT session facilitators.

Finally to Professor Derick Wade for delivering the SRR Philip Nichols Lecture.
