Winning the Verna Wright Prize

31 Oct 2018

Report for The Society for Research in Rehabilitation: Dr Claire Mitchell October 31st 2018

I wanted to acknowledge the receipt of the Verna Wright prize money I was awarded in 2017 at the 14thCongress of the European Forum for Research in Rehabilitation. This was for best oral and poster presentation, and I wanted to inform the SRR council officers how helpful this prize has been. Having had the luxury of being awarded a generous NIHR fellowship for my PhD, where funding for conferences, travel and even accommodation were covered I was not prepared for the reality of life after NIHR. Working as a research fellow on other projects I no longer had funding to attend conferences related to my own research interests and these became quickly out of reach. I was lucky enough to have an abstract accepted to the Cochrane Colloquium in Edinburgh, September 2018, to jointly present with a patient research advisor about the work we had done together to ensure my PhD research was accessible and meaningful to those affected by stroke. Attendance at this conference would not have been possible without the Verna Wright prize money. I would encourage any early career researchers involved in rehabilitation to join the Society for Research in Rehabilitation for a friendly, supportive, multi-disciplinary forum.  Many thanks for the opportunities this Verna Wright prize has given me as well as this accolade being a real incentive as I continue my research.

Thank you Claire, we wish you much sucess and hope this encourages our Associate members to submit a research abstract and be eligible for future prizes http://www.srr.org.uk/verna-wright-prize
