The SRR is the major multidisciplinary rehabilitation research society in the UK. It is a registered charity. Its constitution was adopted in 1979 and it has about 325 members. Its aim is to advance education and research into all aspects of the rehabilitation of disabled people and to disseminate the useful results of such research for the public benefit.

Its main actions are to run a one day winter conference and a two day summer conference each year. Scientific presentations are given at these meetings and research symposia are organised. The twelve best accepted abstracts for each meeting are published in Clinical Rehabilitation.

About the SRR

NEXT MEETING

The next winter meeting will be held in Derby on 3 February 2008.

Symposia will be:

'Behaviour change in rehabilitation' presented by Dr Alison Hammond, University of Salford

This session will explore behavioural modification in rehabilitation, its implications for rehabilitation and directions for future research.

'Severe stroke - a missed opportunity' presented by Professor Cath Sackley, University of Birmingham and Professor David Barer, University of Newcastle

This session will include recovery patterns and potential in severe stroke, evidence for managing mobility related complications and agreeing patient centred goals. It will consider implications for rehabilitation and for research.

There will also be free papers and posters and a forum for discussion of research in progress.

This will be by poster presentation. Members are invited to submit short abstracts. The essential criterion for presenting work in progress is that it must have COREC approval. The nature of the research can range from individual research projects undertaken within a postgraduate research degree to large multicentre trials. NB These abstracts / posters will not be published in Clinical Rehabilitation.

Please submit abstracts using the online submission form, detailing the proposed method and indicating ‘work in progress’ in the results section and 'COREC approval granted' in the conclusion. You will have the opportunity to present your work at the research forum and invite comments and suggestions from members of the SRR Education Committee.

The deadline for the submission of ALL abstracts is 3 November 2008
A programme is available on the 'Meetings' page.

We look forward to seeing you in Derby

LAST MEETING

An excellent Winter Meeting was held in Preston on 2nd and 3rd July 2008. It was hosted by Professor Caroline Watkins, University of Central Lancashire. The Symposia (Orthoptics, osteoarthritis, Nutrition, Health Economics and Multicentre Trials) were very thought provoking. Symposia presentations will shortly be available to download below.

CONFERENCE SYMPOSIUMS

SRR would like to hear from people with suggestions for conference symposiums. Please contact s.tyson@salford.ac.uk, Dr Sarah Tyson, with your suggestions.

Two members were elected to the SRR council at the Summer meeting. Dr John Saxton, Sheffield Hallum University, and Dr Anand Pandyan, University of Keele, will be taking up their roles next year.

LOOKING FOR GOOD CLINICAL PRACTICE (GCP) TRAINING?

UKCRN courses are offered free of charge to all staff and public and patient representatives working on or associated with the UKCRN portfolio of studies. Networks and host organisations are expected to pay travel, accommodation and other additional expenses incurred by their nominated staff. Failure to take up a pre-booked, confirmed place without giving the necessary notice will incur a £75.00 charge to cover part of the UKCRN Coordinating Centre’s costs.

A range of courses (e.g. GCP & the EU Directive, Information Governance and Confidentiality, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Preparing for MHRA Inspection and Audit and Valid Informed Consent) for both experienced and new staff are available at Venue’s across the UK. There are also a number of online training courses available. All of these Courses may be booked on line at: http://www.ukcrn.org.uk/index/training/availability.html

UK STROKE RESEARCH NETWORK (SRN)

The UK Stroke Research Network was established in 2005 with a remit to facilitate the conduct of randomised prospective trials and other well-designed studies relevant to stroke. It aims to enhance NHS stroke research capacity by increasing collaborative working within the UK stroke research community, improving links with academic and commercial funders, and remove barriers to stroke research in the NHS. The network is committed to actively engaging people who have had a stroke and their carers in developing and delivering UKSRN research strategy.

The network comprises the National Coordinating Centre based in Newcastle (Director Prof Gary Ford), eight Local Research Networks distributed around England and associated networks in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The National Directors in Patient Involvement (Helen Rodgers), Acute (Kennedy Lees), Rehabilitation (Marion Walker), Prevention (Philip Bath), Primary Care (Jonathon Mant), Translational Research (Alastair Buchan), Service Development and Training (Damian Jenkinson), and Biostatistics (Ian Ford) will coordinate research across the 8 local networks and chair Clinical Advisory Groups in each of these strands. The Rehabilitation Clinical Study Group is responsible for developing and overseeing a portfolio of rehabilitation studies within the network. Their remit will be to identify gaps in the rehabilitation evidence base and propose and develop new trials and other well designed studies. Further details about the Rehabilitation CSG can be found at www.uksrn.ac.uk

The Clinical Study Group would like to encourage a dialogue with SRR members especially concerning the gaps in the stroke rehabilitation evidence base.
